The Joint Chiropractic Franchise Review: Meet Chad Eads

How an entrepreneur went from owning ice cream shops to becoming
the Regional Developer of Tennessee with the fastest-growing chiropractic franchise

How does an entrepreneur go from owning multiple ice cream shops to owning multiple chiropractic clinics? For Chad Eads, a multi-unit franchisee with The Joint, the answer is simpler than you may think: a savvy entrepreneur goes after a good opportunity when it comes along.

the joint franchise image

Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Chad Eads began his career as an entrepreneur with the Cold Stone Creamery franchise. The ice cream franchise has done enormously well for Eads, who owns six Cold Stone Creamery locations from Asheville to Southern Georgia. When Paul Trindle, another Cold Stone Creamery franchise owner, mentioned that he was investing in a new chiropractic franchise, Eads was immediately interested.

“Asheville is a town that is very focused on health and wellness, and alternative medicine is mainstream here,” Eads says. “When Paul introduced me to the concept, and he showed me how simple it was to own and operate the business, it was a no-brainer. I knew that I was going to invest in this business and open a clinic in Asheville.”

The secret to The Joint’s ongoing success is that the business model is extremely simple to understand. This is by design. Unlike traditional chiropractic clinics, The Joint places its locations in popular destinations — next to retail stores, restaurants and supermarkets. The Joint doesn’t accept insurance, which also does away with the need to chase insurance companies for payment. Instead, The Joint encourages walk-in appointments and offers a gym-like membership model. Most importantly, patients can be treated in 15 minutes or less because The Joint only offers one service: spinal adjustments performed by hand.

“The Joint’s business model is a breeze compared to my ice cream businesses,” Eads says. “In The Joint, your small staff is made up of professionals who are completely aligned in the mission to provide the best customer service and the best treatment for the patient. In my ice cream business, I often joke that it causes brain damage, because you’re dealing with teenagers who show up late, you’re dealing with food and inventory. Compared to that, The Joint is incredibly easy to own.”

As the owner of multiple clinics with The Joint, Eads experiences what so many of the brand’s franchise owners experience on a month-to-month basis: The Joint is far more profitable than a traditional chiropractic clinic. According to The Joint’s most recent Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), the 253 franchise clinics open in 2016 experienced nearly 28 percent growth in average gross sales from 2015, bringing the number to $320,765.

“Every month in business is better than the month before,” Eads says. “If there is a ceiling, we have not hit it yet. The Joint is really making access to chiropractic care more affordable and more accessible than ever before, and we’ve experienced this at our clinics in Asheville.”

In order to help more entrepreneurs find success with The Joint, Eads and Trindle forged a partnership to become the new Regional Developers for The Joint in Tennessee. Eads and Trindles’ shared knowledge of the brand’s business model, and their active ownership in multiple clinics, as well as proximity to Tennessee, makes them ideally suited to grow The Joint in the Volunteer State.

“The amount of wide open territory in Tennessee is an enormous opportunity for entrepreneurs who are passionate about health and wellness,” Eads says. “This business not only has the potential to yield financial rewards, an owner can take pride in the knowledge that their business is actively, meaningfully impacting people in their community who are desperate to find relief from ongoing pain. It is a powerful business to be a part of, and the level of interest we’re experiencing from entrepreneurs in Tennessee is evident of the fact that The Joint will be growing rapidly in the state for years to come.”

The Joint Chiropractic Franchise is No. 9 on Franchise Times’ Fast & Serious List

The fastest-growing chiropractic franchise ranks high on prestigious annual franchise list that measures brands based on growth

Hot on the heels of The Joint’s highest-ever ranking on Entrepreneur magazine’s prestigious annual Franchise 500 list, the fastest growing chiropractic franchise was ranked as No. 9 on Franchise Times’ annual Fast & Serious list.

the joint clinic interior

The list seeks to rank the franchise opportunities that are not only rapidly growing but also growing smartly and effectively. This couldn’t apply more to The Joint, as the magazine points out that since 2014, the chiropractic franchise, “has seen 50 percent unit growth since 2014, finishing 2016 with 370 locations.” Franchise Times points that this tremendous growth resulted in the brand’s climb up seven spots from its position on last year’s list.

Peter Holt, CEO of The Joint, told Franchise Times that the key ingredient for franchise growth is transparency:

“A concept will ‘never be stronger than the franchisees that are brought into your network, so an effective franchise recruitment program is key,’ ” Holt says to Franchise Times. “In your sales process, you need to assure that you are providing the key information that a franchise prospect must know about you, and that you have a process in place to capture key information about the potential franchisee as well”.

Franchise Times praises The Joint’s ability to utilize regional developers to connect entrepreneurs with The Joint in markets across the country.

“Helping to accelerate that growth, The Joint reinstated a regional developer model in which it sells the rights to open a minimum number of clinics in a defined territory and the regional developer in turn helps identify and qualify potential new franchisees in that territory and assists with providing field training, clinic opening and ongoing support,” the publication reports. “This past year The Joint expanded to include eight regional developer territories, with a combined commitment to open a minimum of 211 units in their geographic areas over the next 10 years.”

While The Joint is transforming the chiropractic industry by making chiropractic care more accessible and affordable than ever before, the brand’s business model is likewise transformative by opening up chiropractic business ownership to entrepreneurs without any experience in the field. Business savvy entrepreneurs can hire chiropractors to manage the chiropractic care and the steady stream of patients that the business model allows for, while the owner gets to focus on the business itself.

Getting this message out to the entrepreneur community is high on the list of goals for The Joint’s executive team going forward.

“We are trying to overcome this challenge in our franchise recruitment messaging,” Holt says to Franchise Times. “We have also added complete P&L information to our Item 19 in our FDD and have created a stand-alone franchise website to educate potential franchisees so they understand that this model has strong unit economics and is right for entrepreneurs and doctors of chiropractic alike.”

The Joint also announced that expansion into Texas continues with four new clinics in development for the Houston market. Growth beyond the Lonestar State remains strong as well, with four new clinics planned for Cleveland, Ohio.

“We are extremely excited about the continued momentum The Joint is experiencing in the early months of 2018,” says Eric Simon, Vice President of Franchise Sales and Development with The Joint. “Our regional developers have been extremely effective in connecting entrepreneurs and chiropractors with our franchise opportunity. Given that so many millions of people are in need of affordable and high-quality chiropractic care, we expect our growth will continue to be strong as the year moves forward.”

You Don’t Need a Medical Background to Franchise with The Joint

The fastest-growing chiropractic franchise has a simple business model that is attracting entrepreneurs with no prior medical background

The Joint, the nation’s fastest-growing chiropractic franchise, recently celebrated 400 locations open across the country. That milestone would have been unthinkable if the business model was designed for only those with experience in owning and operating a chiropractic clinics. While it is true that chiropractors are franchising with The Joint in large numbers, their reason is the same as any other entrepreneur’s: the business model is easy to understand.

the joint franchise image

Walk into one of The Joint’s more than 400 clinics in the United States, and you will see a simple layout: one person who welcomes patients, and one or two doctors treating patients expertly and efficiently. By only performing spinal alignments conducted by hand, doctors who work for The Joint can see many more patients each day than a traditional chiropractic clinic. This is strategic as The Joint is a cash-model business that requires no appointments and no insurance. Clinics are placed in highly-visible retail settings next to supermarkets, coffee shops and restaurants, and they are open nights and weekends. The Joint is not only making chiropractic care more accessible to consumers, it also is making owning a chiropractic clinic more accessible to entrepreneurs.

An excellent example is Paul Trindel, who was a multi-unit owner of Cold Stone Creamery before becoming a multi-unit franchisee with The Joint and regional developer for clinics in North Carolina and Tennessee.

“The Joint is far simpler to open and manage than a food business,” Trindel says. “I often joke that it causes a lot less brain damage. At my ice cream businesses, I’m dealing with teenagers, who can be flaky, late and unprofessional. At The Joint, it’s completely the opposite. Your staff shares the same purpose you do, which is to help people get the care they need.”

Founded in 1999, The Joint is leading the way in making chiropractic care an essential and affordable part of health and wellness for millions of people seeking relief from back, neck and joint pain. As a result, The Joint can treat many more patients than a traditional chiropractic clinic by a large margin. According to the brand’s most recent Franchise Disclosure Document, The Joint reported weekly patient visits that were 152 percent higher than those to individually-owned clinics.

For Robb Quinlan, who was a professional baseball player with the Los Angeles Angels before becoming the owner of four franchise clinics with The Joint in Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Joint is a way to get into business that serves a noble purpose in the community.

“When I discovered The Joint, and I saw how they were making chiropractic care more accessible, more affordable and convenient for people, I knew that I wanted to become a franchisee. I recognized that The Joint is the future of the chiropractic industry,” Quinlan says. “The Joint is a great business for entrepreneurs who want to make a difference.”

The Joint Welcomes New Regional Developers of Tennessee

The fastest-growing chiropractic franchise announces new Regional Developers to spearhead growth in the Volunteer State

The Joint, the nation’s fastest-growing chiropractic franchise, recently announced aggressive expansion plans for Tennessee. With plans to open multiple locations across the state in the coming years, The Joint is excited to announce veteran franchisees Chad Eades and Paul Trindle as the new Regional Developers for Tennessee.

Image of Nashville, with "Expansion Plans For Tennessee" caption.

Trindle and Eades are multi-unit franchisees with The Joint, and the longtime friends are the ideal ambassadors to onboard new entrepreneurs. Their success in managing multiple clinics, despite not having prior experience in the chiropractic industry, is a testament to the ease and simplicity of the brand’s business model. Their intimate knowledge of how to run and grow profitable clinics will be a vital resource for new franchisees in Tennessee.

“We’re extremely excited to help entrepreneurs in Tennessee find success with The Joint,” Trindle says. “The opportunity is simply enormous. Last month, our combined region of North Carolina and Tennessee performed over 34,000 adjustments, which just shows you how many people are in need of affordable and accessible chiropractic care. We only have seven clinics open in Tennessee, and the level of interest we’re experiencing now from entrepreneurs is a clear indicator that we’ve barely scratched the surface in the market.”

Inside view of The Joint ChiropracticFounded in 1999, The Joint is leading the way in making chiropractic care an essential and affordable part of health and wellness for millions of people seeking relief from back, neck and joint pain. Rapid expansion is proof that The Joint is meeting an enormous need in communities across the country. In the past few years, The Joint has grown consistently and now has more than 400 locations open or in development across the United States.

The new Regional Developers recently took a road trip across Tennessee to survey the landscape and explore the markets where The Joint can expand its existing footprint, as well as establish a presence.

“We put 1,500 miles on the car in a week and a half,” Eades says. “There are so many opportunities to capitalize on the growing demand for chiropractic across the entire state. It’s hard to believe that we do not have clinics open in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Bristol. In Nashville, where we have four clinics open, and Memphis, where we have three, there is still ample opportunity for existing franchisees to expand their footprint. We’re excited to help new and existing franchisees make a real difference in people’s lives, while also improving the quality of their own lives by opening new franchise clinics for The Joint.

The Joint Franchise Announces New Area Developer for Florida

The fastest-growing chiropractic franchise takes steps to foster further growth in the Sunshine State

The Joint Chiropractic is proud to announce that multi-unit franchisee Shane Weber and his team are the new area developers in Florida. Shane owns and manages four clinics in Atlanta, Georgia. The success of his businesses, combined with his passion for chiropractic care, make him ideally suited to grow The Joint in the Sunshine State.

“I’m tremendously excited to help expand The Joint in the untapped Florida market,” Shane says. “Florida has so much potential for entrepreneurs to thrive with The Joint. It’s completely underdeveloped, and based on demographics alone, Florida should be one of the most developed territories for The Joint.”

The Florida Legislature is working on changing the way traditional chiropractic care is regulated. As a result, the wild profitability that traditional chiropractic clinics have seen historically is in question. This also means that there will be many chiropractors looking to franchise with The Joint in the near future, so now is a great time to capitalize on the opportunity while the prime territories are still available.

The Joint Chiropractic is bringing the chiropractic industry to the mainstream

Shane knows the benefits of chiropractic care firsthand. After launching his first business at the age of 22, Shane became a public speaker, helping to build leadership and sales skills for corporate teams across the country. The constant traveling caused severe back pains that didn’t resolve until Shane saw a chiropractor. After this breakthrough, he knew he wanted to get off the road and build a business for himself. He started researching franchise opportunities.

When I discovered The Joint and looked at the simplicity of the business model, I knew that I had to invest in this business” said Shane. Chiropractic care has been so beneficial to m,e personally, and the fact that I have four clinics open in Atlanta proves that there is a tremendous need. The Joint allows people to get treated quickly and affordably, and as an owner, you not only get the financial rewards, but you’re helping people in your community.”

The Joint Chiropractic clinics are placed strategically next to community mainstays such as supermarkets, coffee shops, restaurants and hair salons. With no appointments, no insurance and no hassle, The Joint has grown to more than 350 locations across the United States. In the process, we have brought a misunderstood practice to where it has always belonged: an essential part of health and wellness.

With an exceptional support, initial and ongoing training, marketing support and an industry-leading ability to find premier locations in the markets we serve, The Joint provides entrepreneurs the tools and resources they need.

“It is my calling to help entrepreneurs succeed,” Shane says. “This is a conviction that I share with The Joint’s executive team. They have built a business model that is simple to run and simple to scale, and they continually look for a way to help franchisees increase their level of profitability. If you’re a driven entrepreneur with the desire to succeed The Joint is the right business for you.”

The Joint Chiropractic is a low-cost investment opportunity with high potential returns

With a small footprint, limited overhead and a staff consisting of three to four employees, The Joint is easy to operate and boasts a proven business model that is uncommon in the $3 trillion healthcare industry. Our membership model eliminates the need for insurance while providing our franchise owners with a recurring revenue stream that helps to maximize profitability and potentially hasten their return on investment. Our model works for chiropractors seeking to own a simpler business that avoids the nightmare of insurance billing, and it works incredibly well for business investors who see the need for more accessible chiropractic care.

The Joint was named to Entrepreneur magazine’s prestigious annual Franchise 500 list of the top franchise systems to invest in for 2017. It’s easy to see why, as Entrepreneur notes, that The Joint grew by a phenomenal 40 franchise locations from 2015 to 2016, continuing a growth spurt that hasn’t slowed since The Joint began franchising in 2006.

With the total financial estimate to begin operations on a new chiropractic franchise ranging from $211,400 to $339,500,, The Joint is a low-cost investment opportunity with potential for high returns. The franchise fee for your first chiropractic franchise is $39,900.

The Joint Franchise Is in Rapid Growth Mode

The fastest growing chiropractic franchise brings on new VP of Franchise Sales and Development to shepherd in era of rapid national expansion

The Joint is the fastest growing chiropractic franchise in the nation, with over 370 clinics open. The brand has no plans of slowing down anytime soon, with goals to expand to 1,700 locations across the United States in the coming years. In order to facilitate this growth, the company has brought on Eric Simon as the new VP of Franchise Sales and Development.

chiropractic franchise

Eric comes to The Joint with decades of experience in the franchise industry, and most recently served in the same role in a high profile setting with AAMCO, where he helped usher in a new period of growth and franchisee satisfaction for the iconic transmission repair giant. Eric’s background goes far beyond his role, spending time as both a franchisee, and in the intellectual realm of franchising, analyzing the industry and helping brands finance their applicants with a company called FRANdata.

“I was attracted to join The Joint for a bunch of different reasons, but the fact that The Joint is in growth mode was high on the list,” Eric says. “In my career, I’ve been with franchisors at various stages in the life cycle of a brand — some needed rehabilitation, some needed to become established, but when a franchisor is in growth mode, that is the most exciting time to be there. I also wanted to be a part of something that was helping people, and with The Joint being at the forefront of the rapidly growing chiropractic industry, the opportunity to do so is enormous. It was a no brainer, and I’m excited about the future of this great brand.”

Founded in 1999, The Joint has revolutionized the $14 billion chiropractic industry. As the first publicly-traded membership-based chiropractic franchise, The Joint is a vastly different business model than the hard-to-find chiropractic clinics of yore. The Joint places its clinics in highly visible retail settings next to local coffee shops and supermarkets. There are no appointments, no insurance and no waiting to see a doctor. The Joint is also far more affordable than traditional chiropractic clinics; the average visit to The Joint costs nearly half as much as the insurance co-pay of a traditional chiropractic visit.

“People are looking for alternative ways to manage pain, and for the millions of people who suffer from daily back pain, The Joint doesn’t disrupt their entire lives,” Eric says. “Our customers don’t have to take the day off work to find relief. They can visit us on their lunch breaks or on their way home from work. It’s at a price point where people don’t have to go through insurance, and our membership model makes visiting us even more affordable. The Joint is super convenient for customers, there are no appointments, and it serves a market that is underserved: the millions of people who experience back pain but haven’t experienced chiropractic care before. It’s a win-win for consumers and our franchisees alike.”

As a franchise system, The Joint is in a class by itself. Entrepreneur magazine recently ranked The Joint as the No. 1 franchise opportunity in the healthcare segment for the second year in a row on their prestigious annual “Best of the Best” list. The brand’s proven business model is providing entrepreneurs and chiropractors alike with the chance to live their passion of helping others while also making a great business.

With a small footprint, limited overhead and a staff consisting of three to four employees, The Joint is easy to operate and boasts a proven business model that is unique in the $3 trillion healthcare industry. Our membership model eliminates the need for insurance, while providing our franchise owners with a recurring revenue stream that helps to maximize profitability and potentially hasten the return on investment. Our model works for chiropractors seeking to own a simpler business that avoids the nightmare of insurance billing, and it works incredibly well for business investors who see the need for more accessible chiropractic care.

“It’s such a simple business model, so it’s easy for new entrepreneurs to understand how they can be successful,” Eric says. “It’s also equally attractive for chiropractors who are sick of the insurance industry, which gets in the way of their private practice. They want to be able to take on new patients and practice their craft, and have an accessible, cash-only business to complement their traditional clinic. There’s no costs of goods, there is minimum overhead, and it’s a high volume business that’s providing a service millions of people need. Chiropractors often wonder how we can charge what we charge and be profitable, but once they talk to our franchisees, they get it. The simplicity of our business model is just world’s away from traditional clinics, and it is why our franchisees can quickly scale to multiple units.”

Part of the success of The Joint is that the brand is the first to put chiropractic care into the retail setting; The Joint clinics are placed in bustling shopping centers that have heavy foot traffic, ideal parking and the brands that the community loves to visit. And it isn’t a guessing game; The Joint employs the strategies of Global Information Systems (GIS) and customer analytics to help determine exactly where a new location might be successful in any given community.

“When people come into the system, we go above and beyond to ensure that when they open their doors to their community, they are positioned for success,” Eric says. “The real estate team uses a phenomenal amount of data, and takes a scientific, analytical approach to where clinics should go in any given market. We want our franchisees to be successful over the long-term, so we measure everything from demographics to psychographics to city planning. Our process really works. Our next Franchise Disclosure Document will have an in-depth Item 19, which will give prospective franchisees a full view of the past year’s financials from a large group of existing franchisees. We had a really great year in 2016, and 2017 is shaping up to be even better.”

The Joint is a low-cost investment opportunity with high potential returns

With the total financial estimate to begin operations on a new chiropractic franchise ranging from $216,200 to $331,700, The Joint is a low-cost investment opportunity with potential for high returns. Because our build-out costs are substantially lower than other brands in the healthcare segment, The Joint offers a quicker ramp-up time to allow for a potentially faster return on investment. The franchise fee for your first chiropractic franchise is $39,900.
