The Joint Chiropractic Franchise Is Combating the Opioid Crisis

The fastest-growing chiropractic franchise offers drug-free relief from pain as an alternative to prescription pain medication

The opioid epidemic is a national crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every four patients struggles with addiction after being prescribed pain medication for non-cancer treatments. With the terrible effects of opioid addiction now widely known, the medical industry is recommending chiropractic care as an alternative to pain medication — and people are listening.

For the franchise owners of The Joint, the nation’s fastest-growing chiropractic franchise, the ability to help people in need is the most meaningful part of the business:

“I love being in the wellness space,” says Jeff McGinty, a multi-unit franchisee with The Joint in Atlanta, Georgia. “I love waking up and wondering how many lives we’re going to change today. It’s not a question of if we’re going to change lives — it’s a question of how many.”

The research is in: chiropractic care is an effective drug-free alternative to addictive medication

In a recent article published by the American Chiropractic Association, titled, “Chiropractic and the Opioid Epidemic: Rethinking Our Approach to Pain,” the research in the effectiveness of chiropractic care is well-established and is causing a change in approach by the medical industry at large:

In 2017, the American College of Physicians (ACP) updated its guidelines for the treatment of acute and chronic low back pain to recommend first using non-invasive, non-drug treatments before resorting to drug therapies.
In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines for prescribing opioids that also promote non-pharmacologic alternatives for the treatment of chronic pain.
In 2015, the Joint Commission, the organization that accredits more than 20,000 health care systems in the U.S., including every major hospital, recognized the value of non-drug approaches by adding chiropractic and acupuncture to its pain management standard.*

In a moving article published recently in the Aiken Standard, “For Many, Opioid Addiction Starts with Chronic Pain,” journalist Kristina Rackley begins with: “Opioid addiction is an increasingly widespread problem in Aiken.”

In an effort to help readers understand that there are other options beyond paid medication to ease pain, she interviews Dr. Jerry Odom, a chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic franchise in Aiken, S.C. Odom says that “30 percent of Americans live with some sort of chronic pain,” and that is the root of the problem.

“Most people, when they’re in pain, they go to the ER or their primary care provider,” Odom says in the article. “Most often they get prescription opioids or muscle relaxers … We adjust the structural dysfunction in the body, allowing it to heal itself, which more often than not erases the need for opioids all together.”

Odom, as the doctor, experiences how chiropractic care changes lives for the better on a daily basis:

“I just had a patient come in yesterday … She’s had chronic neck pain and low back pain for years, and has been taking several different types of pain relievers,” Odom says in the article. “She reported to me yesterday that she hadn’t taken anything in eight days.”
